Thousands of construction jobs at risk

More than 175,000 construction jobs could be lost if the UK loses access to the European single market as a result of Brexit, the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors warns.

A study by the RICS shows 8% of the UK’s construction sector workforce, around 176,500 workers, are nationals of other EU countries.

The construction industry is dependent on thousands of EU workers, Jeremy Blackburn, the head of UK policy at the RICS, said. A loss of access to the single market could slowly bring the country’s £500bn infrastructure pipeline to a standstill, he said.
