Thousands of houses planned for Ashdown Forest

Ashdown Forest, the setting for the Winnie-the-Pooh stories, is at risk as a result of plans to increase home-building in the area around it, according to campaigners.

The Planning Inspectorate is in talks with the district council about a target of 1,026 new homes a year, or 17,442 over 17 years.

The council had recommended the building of 800 homes a year. The Planning Inspectorate’s Jonathan Bore dismissed its fears that the increased number would have a negative impact on environmental sustainability.
