The only purpose-built children’s hospital in Britain this century opened yesterday but a funding crisis could force its eventual closure. The £15m Derbyshire Children’s Hospital, in Derby, is already listed as a potential victim of economic cutbacks by Southern Derbyshire Health Authority. Health authority officials say a funding crisis could necessitate merging Derby City Hospital, of which the 77-bed children’s hospital is part, with the nearby Derbyshire Royal Infirmary.
