Tide Construction has been given the green light to deliver 758 student bedrooms on the former Carpetright site on Loampit Vale in Lewisham.
The council approved the plans for Lewisham Exchange, which also include 67 social rented apartments and 9,000 sq ft of commercial space.
The development will be spread across two blocks of 20 and 35 storeys. Councillors raised concerns over affordability and segregation of social housing.
However, the overall vote was in favour of the scheme. The site, previously owned by Threadneedle Pensions, received consent for a residential development of 242 homes in February 2018. Tide acquired the site in September 2018 and submitted the fresh application at the start of the year switching the use class to student housing, under sui generis.
The developer is currently building a second student scheme in the borough for Greystar and PSP Investments. The scheme is called Chapter and comprises 611 student beds in two towers of 11 storeys. The scheme will now go to the GLA for the final approval.
