A call by the Migration Advisory Committee to impose a minimum salary requirement of £30,000 for workers coming from outside Europe, together with other proposals by the committee, would hit thousands of firms, the Institute of Directors said.
Ministers are looking to reduce net migration, which has reached more than 330,000 a year. Other proposals include imposing an immigration skills charge and tightening restrictions on intra-company staff transfers.
British Chambers of Commerce executive director Adam Marshall said extra charges on companies recruiting from abroad made no sense given that businesses are reporting severe recruitment difficulties.
