The prime minister’s first 1,000 days in office comes under the microscope in The Daily Telegraph where achievements and failures are detailed.
Achievements include abandoning the “predict and provide” approach to planning which has driven the building of houses since the war and establishing an urban task force to find ways to build 60% of new homes on recycled land over the next 10 years. They also include the establishment of walk-in NHS centres, the creation of the Strategic Rail Authority, rural bus grant increases and the agreement to allow local authorities to retain toll money and car park charges for local transport improvements.
Failures include the abandonment of John Prescott’s promise for a reduction in traffic growth and the failure of the deputy prime minister to resign or fight back following his U-turn on this key policy and the poor state of public transport and the road network. The Guardian also carries a detailed feature. The rest of the reports include less coverage.
