Tops gets go-ahead to extend Liverpool’s Clayton Square shopping centre

Tops Estates has won planning permission for a 2,322 sq m (25,000 sq ft) extension to its Clayton Square shopping centre in Liverpool.

The 26,477 sq m (285,000 sq ft) development will be expanded by building into the atrium and the main mall and adding mezzanine levels. The new anchor store will be in the atrium area and overlook the Cases Street entrance.

Tops’ scheme will add a significant tranche of space to an undersupplied market. Mark Williams of joint letting agent DTZ Debenham Thorpe said: “There is a pent up demand for units in Liverpool that are on absolute prime pitch – Clayton Square and Church Street – and of a larger size.”

In July last year, JD Sports switched its Manchester flagship store to Clayton Square following the terrorist bombing. The retailer is paying £269 per sq m (£25 per sq ft) for a 1,022 sq m (11,000 sq ft) unit.

DTZ Debenham Thorpe is the joint letting agent with Donaldsons. The landlord is Marklands, a subsidiary of Tops Estates.
