Tories propose powers for councils to stop greenfield housing

The Conservatives have proposed councils should be given new powers to stop greenfield housing developments.

John Redwood, shadow environment secretary, told the Tory party conference at Blackpool that Labour was planning a mass invasion of greenfield sites “with the bulldozer”. He also said the Conservatives planned the most significant investment in the Tube since Victorian times.

Party leader William Hague said two-thirds of new development should be built on brownfield sites.
