The government has narrowed the field of contenders to take over the Tote to Betfred, and Sir Martin Broughton’s consortium, ending the ambitions of the Reuben brothers among others.
The government is expected to grant one of the two remaining parties preferred bidder status in the next few days with a view to completing a deal by late spring.
