Leeds and Manchester council leaders have vowed to fight for new tram schemes after transport secretary Alistair Darling scrapped the projects last week because of their costs.
Leeds plans to submit a revised proposal in September that will provide an “affordable” light rail scheme.
Manchester councillors, who want to expand their Metrolink tram system, have arranged a meeting with the Transport Department on Wednesday.
