Tram troubles alert for PFI

Worries are growing about PFI after it emerged Manchester Metrolink had failed to return accounts for 2001.

Metrolinks difficulties have been revealed just days after reports of problems at Croydon Tramlink and Midland Metro.

One analyst said the situation once again highlighted the need for greater disclosure of the performance of PFI investments in parent company accounts.

Now it is feared other projects such as the £500m Leeds Supertram scheme and the £190m South Hampshire Rapid Transit project, currently out to tender, will struggle to raise backing unless risk to the private sector is reduced.
