Transport stands in the way of Olympics bid

A report published by the London Assembly says Londons bid to host the 2012 Olympics does not stand a chance of success unless the government improves buses and the Underground.

The government is talking to Arup to agree the likely cost of staging the Olympics in the capital. Both their previous estimates have widely differed but they need to come up with a common position with parliamentary hearings this week into Londons possible bid for the Games.

Disagreement on the likely costs could impede the prospects of a credible bid.

But Tessa Jowell, secretary of state of culture, media and sport, will tell MPs in Commons debate tomorrow there is a strong supporting case for hosting the Games.
