Travelodge to open 20 more London hotels

Travelodge has outlined plans to open 20 hotels over the next five years across London, in response to growing consumer demand for budget hotels in the capital.

The hotel chain said it is actively looking at opportunities in more than 100 London locations.

The expansion programme is expected to create more than 500 new jobs, with investment of up to £350m from third-party investors.

This week it opened two hotels, in Beckton and Dagenham, bringing its total hotel count to 589. Of these, 77 are in London.

Tony O’Brien, UK development director, said: “As we look to the future, London is a world-class destination for leisure and business travellers. However, there still remains a desperate need for more good-quality, low-cost accommodation, especially across the boroughs.

“Currently, the budget sector accounts for 23% of the London hotel market. This is well below the national average and means that London has fewer budget hotels than other major cities such as Birmingham, Edinburgh and Manchester.

“Also, with the average hotel price currently at almost twice the level of the UK regions, consumers are crying out for more good-quality, low-cost places to stay throughout the capital.”
