Danny Alexander has told The Daily Telegraph that the Treasury has started working on framing a mansion tax.
The chief secretary to the Treasury said officials had begun work on a tax that could be levied as soon as next year. He said the measure had attracted growing political support. Alexander would not say if the mansion tax would be one of the Liberal Democrat’s conditions for another coalition. He said polls showed 80% public support for a “modest additional levy on higher value properties” to help close the deficit.
