Cineworld, an indebted cinema chain, has been hit with a winding-up petition from the landlord of its Picturehouse cinema in London’s Piccadilly.
The Times reports that London Trocadero (2015) LLP lodged the claim last week. Last year the landlord won a claim against Picturehouse Cinemas over £2.9m in unpaid rent during the pandemic.
Last week Cineworld said its management team is considering a Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection filing in the US, adding that it is “in discussions with many of its major stakeholders including its secured lenders and their legal and financial advisers”.
The company’s London-listed shares have plummeted from 198.85 at the start of 2020 to just 2.3p at the market’s close last week.
