Donald Trump has called for a mistrial in his $250m real estate fraud case.
The former president’s lawyers have filed papers arguing that the judge, Arthur Engoron, acted unfairly when he issued a gag order last month. It prevented Trump, and subsequently his staff, from attacking the court and judge’s staff.
Trump’s team has said the order would cause observers to “question the court’s partiality”.
The order was first imposed after Trump posted, incorrectly, that the judge’s principal law clerk was the girlfriend of leading Democrat Chuck Schumer.
Engoron has already ruled that Trump and his company, the Trump Organization, committed fraud.
