Trump’s Scottish golf resorts tee up £15m loss

Donald Trump’s Scottish resorts have reported a £15m loss, with the blame placed on Covid lockdowns and Brexit.

The bulk of the loss was at Turnberry, the five-star hotel and links course on the Ayrshire coast. Accounts filed at Companies House for Golf Recreation Scotland, its parent, show revenue nearly doubling to £13.1m in the year as lockdowns were lifted.

However, it registered a £14.7m pre-tax loss, including a £9.7m hit from adverse foreign exchange movements, a £3.9m depreciation charge and £2.2m for ending an agreement on running the hotel.

Trump International Golf Links at Balmedie in Aberdeenshire was also in the red, even though its turnover nearly doubled to £2.1m. Its pre-tax loss for 2021 was £687,000, after a £1.3m loss for the previous year.

The course also still owes a £40.6m loan to Donald Trump.
