Truss to take aim at ‘anti-growth’ regulation

Liz Truss will attempt to win back the Conservative Party today after a gruelling week.

In a speech at the Conservative Party Conference in Birmingham today, the prime minister will tell delegates that an “anti-growth coalition” and the “enemies of enterprise” are holding Britain back.

Truss plans to say: “From broadcast to podcast, they peddle the same old answers… more taxes, more regulation and more meddling. Wrong, wrong, wrong. We see the anti-growth coalition holding us back.”

Much like the chancellor’s speech on Monday, the prime minister’s is expected to be short and light on detail. Insiders have implied that several policies that were to be launched have been removed to avoid further alarming the markets.

Truss has suffered two U-turns in 24 hours – on the 45p tax rate and when a fiscal statement will be published – and is now facing open revolt in her Cabinet over the scale of cuts.

Levelling-up secretary Simon Clarke has backed claims that some senior Tories are attempting to stage a “coup”.
