Tulip tower wins approval after critics fail to nip it in the bud

Its supporters say that it will be a unique attraction, offering views across London from one of Europe’s tallest buildings. Among its opponents, one calls it “a lift shaft with a bulge on top”.

Yesterday the Tulip, as the 305.3m observation tower has been nicknamed, was granted planning permission by the City of London despite 46 formal objections and an unprecedented intervention by Duncan Wilson, the chief executive of Historic England.

“This building — a lift shaft with a bulge on top — will cause permanent and irreversible damage to the setting of the Tower of London, and in turn, the image and identity of the capital,” Wilson said. “We don’t raise concerns about the majority of new tall buildings that are proposed in London but we strongly believe that this project is the wrong building in the wrong place.”
