U.K. mobile phone coverage to be extended

The four main U.K. mobile phone network operators will from 2017 be required to cover 90% of Britain’s landmass.

Hundreds of new masts are likely to be required to achieve the reduction in the number of areas with limited mobile coverage, and the investment programme needed is set at £5 billion. Operators will be allowed to place masts on government buildings, and it is expected that rents for existing masts and licence fees will be reduced to fund the investment.

The deal gives operators a year longer than had previously been mooted to reach the target. A plan to make the operators share networks was dropped.
