UK chemist to expand in the Netherlands

UK chemist Boots is expanding into the Netherlands with a £49m programme to open 45 Boots Health and Beauty stores over the next four years.

The announcement follows the success of five pilot stores which have been opened across the country, according to Lord Blyth, Boots’ chairman. Each store will be around 400m2.

Lord Blyth said: “Boots’ combination of cosmetics, fine fragrance, toiletries and healthcare all under one roof has been a completely new concept in the Dutch market and extremely well received. Our customer profile is similar to that of Boots The Chemists in the UK and Boots brands are selling well.”

Boots says that its own-brand products account for a third of sales in the pilot stores. It opened its first Dutch store in Rotterdam in July 1997. It now has further shops in Maastricht, Breda, Haarlem and Amsterdam Noord.
