The Midlands Engine sees the key cities of the region – Birmingham, Coventry, Nottingham, Derby, Leicester and Lincoln – coming together in a similar way to the cities in the Northern Powerhouse.
There has been debate about whether the “engine” moniker narrows the perception of the region’s economic drivers and while advanced engineering plays a big part, financial and professional services, science, bioscience and tech, among others, are key industry sectors.

Cambridge, with its university, science and tech cluster, is the region’s economic driver. The University of East Anglia in Norwich is also a world-class institution. The region has the highest GVA growth projections of any region in the UK.
