UK Coal to tackle North East coastal regeneration

UK Coal is to lodge plans this week for a major residential-led regeneration of North East coastal villages Ellington and Lynemouth.

The UK’s largest independent coal producer will lodge two residential-led mixed use planning applications with Castle Morpeth council.

The group said that the plans had followed years of discussions involving residents of the villages in south-east Northumberland.

The two outline planning applications and environmental statements prepared by North East based consultants ENTEC comprise:

– up to 300 homes in Ellington embracing a flagship ‘Network Village’ on the former colliery site, creating ‘live-work’ units, workspace, offices and community facilities, as well as public open space including a new full-size football pitch;

up to 200 homes in Lynemouth, almost 30 acres of employment space and the relocation of the Lynemouth day-care centre.

The plans will be lodged four years after Ellington, the last operational deep mine in the North East which was saved from closure by UK Coal in 1994, ceased production after the pits’ under-sea workings were flooded and almost 350 employees lost their jobs.
