UK election result could be messy, says Neil

The result of the upcoming general election could be the messiest the UK has ever seen, warned journalist Andrew Neil at the City Property Association (CPA) annual lunch.

The publisher, writer & broadcaster addressed over 600 guests in the City’s historic Guildhall.

He said that factions within parties at both ends of the political spectrum could result in an unstable government whichever way the vote goes on 7 May.

“Since the Scottish referendum the left is now divided,” he said. “Maybe even more seriously than the right.

“We are in unchartered territory, putting together a government from a diverse band of parties and the result is likely to be unstable.”

He added that this election is David Cameron’s to lose and that while historically one party is usually up and the other down, in this instance the two are on a par.

“Both Labour and the Conservatives are equally miserable,” he said. “Neither thinks they are going to win and so they are both grumpy. And whichever party loses in May will be heading straight into a leadership election.”

He added: “This might not be the most important election we have ever faced but it is certainly the most interesting I have ever covered.”
