UK house price growth surprises in August

UK house price growth in August was the highest so far this year, at 1.1%, improving on the previous month’s 0.7% rise, figures from lender Halifax showed.

Prices in the three months to the end of August were 2.6% higher on the year, an acceleration from a rise of 2.1% in the three months to the end of July.

Mortgage approval figures suggest some buoyancy may be returning, possibly on the back of strong recent employment growth, Halifax managing director Russell Galley said.
