UK mortgage approvals rose to 68,076 in April, the highest level since February 2014, data from the Bank of England showed.
Not only is the figure the highest in more than a year, the monthly increase – 61,945 mortgages were approved in March – was the largest since 2009.
The figures remain well below those of a decade ago, but, given that they relate to the month before the general election, they are being viewed as a further sign of a strengthening housing market.
