Underground zip-wire plans go downhill fast

Planners in the Lake District have rejected proposals for an underground zip-wire.

Burlington Stone, which has run the Elterwater slate quarry for two centuries, wanted to create a tourist attraction that would allow the public into the caverns for the first time.

Instead of wandering around on foot, it wanted an explorer experience using zip wires between metal platforms in a previously mined cavern.

On Wednesday, members of the Lake District National Park development control committee went against their own officers’ recommendation to agree the plans for the quarry in the Langdale Valley.

Unesco’s International Council on Monuments raised concerns that the Lake District was being transformed into a theme park, while councillors were concerned about the rise in traffic.
