Unicorn craze creates some magical sales for Dunelm

The craze for unicorn-themed products has helped Dunelm to defy the gloom on the high street and upgrade its profit expectations.

Britain’s biggest homewares and soft furnishings store brought forward its second-quarter trading update yesterday, revealing a 9% rise in like-for-like sales over the 13 weeks to December 29.

The improvement was driven by a 5.7% increase in like-for-like revenue to £246.4m at its 170-plus stores and a 37.9% rise to £36.1m at Dunelm.com.

The FT added that the UK home furnishings group received a new year boost, with investors sending its share price up as much as 13% on Monday, as its recent earnings showed efforts to refocus the business were paying off.
