Union Investment Real Estate has appointed former RICS president Martin Brühl as chief investment officer amid plans to restructure UIRE’s investment management business.

The department will be split into two main units under Brühl, with teams dedicated to European and overseas investment management.

Philip La Pierre, former head of European investment activity, will lead Union’s overseas business, which includes five markets across the Americas and Asia-Pacific.

Meanwhile, Martin Schellein will take on the European half of the department.

Brühl has been at Union since 2013 and was formerly in charge of Union’s international investment department.

He said: “In 2016, our specialist investment teams handled global acquisitions and sales with a total value of €4.6bn. We are aware that the bar for investment management has been raised even further since last year.
