Developer Urban Splash is to hand over a number of sites to other developers on Manchester’s New Islington project.
Urban Splash will remain on the project as lead developer, and will still deliver the majority of the projects.
However, other plots are to be taken forward separately, with developer McCaul currently on site in conjunction with partners the Homes and Communities Agency and Manchester city council.
The New Islington/Ancoats project to regenerate the Cardroom Estate was conceived over 10 years ago, and has seen such iconic developments as the Chips Building created.
Urban Splash has so far delivered hundreds of homes and workspaces, as well as a marina, a health centre and a primary school.
An Urban Splash spokesman said: “New Islington continues to be one of Manchester’s key developments and Urban Splash alongside the other two project partners, the HCA and Manchester city council, remain fully committed to it.
“Urban Splash has and will continue to have responsibility for the delivery of the majority of the remaining sites at New Islington.
“It has always been the intention that developers who understood the quality, aspirations and vision of New Islington were given the opportunity to develop some of the plots. Over the course of the project so far, the partners have worked with Great Places Housing Group, NHS Lift, The Manchester Grammar School, the Free Schools Network and in partnership with other developers like the McCauls Point scheme which is now on site.
“All partners are keen to continue to add to the development diversity and we have recently revised that legal agreement to simplify the above arrangements to allow earlier delivery given the improving market conditions. The partners will in due course make announcements how other developers can get involved in New Islington.”
