US economy and sliding dollar hampers chances for Northern Ireland inward investment

A high-level political delegation in New York to win inward investment for Northern Ireland was hampered by the continuation of the US dollars sharp slide against the yen and European currencies.

Warnings about the deteriorating US economy also made potential investors nervous.

Adam Ingram, Northern Ireland minister, said any investment decisions made as a result of the current trip would not take effect for some time, by which time the economic situation could have subsided.

The Financial Times says the pressure faced by US companies might make them less willing to consider Northern Ireland investments. Northern Telecom recently decided to create 24 research jobs in the province.
