US investment fund plans cultural circus for Rome site

A Covent Garden-style retail, entertainment and cultural centre will be developed on an historic site in Rome by the Mills Corporation.

The US real estate investment trust has been selected by the City of Rome to develop a 77,100 sq m scheme on the site of the former Mercati Generali, 600 meters from the perimeter of ancient Rome.

The preliminary designs for the development are by architect Rem Koolhaas of Rotterdam.

This is Mills’ second scheme on the Continent after Madrid Xanadu, a 130,000 sq ft retail and entertainment scheme, which opened in May 2003.

Mills is also part of the consortium planning the £1bn mixed-use regeneration scheme at Ravenscraig in Lanarkshire, Scotland.
