Varied response by councils to deferred residential care payment agreements

A failure by some local authorities to agree deferred residential care payments could create problems for the government’s reform of social care.

A total of 10 local authorities have not entered into any agreements with residents going into care homes, while 47 councils have agreed fewer than 10 deals, freedom of information requests by Royal London revealed.

If far more people are going to be looking to access the system, due to social care means-testing including the family home, the government will need to address why the present system is not working properly, according to Royal London director of policy Steve Webb.
