Victorian fort attracts huge interest at Clive Emson sale

Clive Emson raised more than £21m at its July auction, selling more than 75% of the 119 lots on offer.

Highlights included Fort Gilkicker (pictured), in Alverstoke, Gosport, which went under the gavel at £1.38m after attracting huge interest. The Victorian structure, built at the behest of prime minister Lord Palmerston, was sold with consent for conversion to 26 homes.

Other highlights:

  • Land with planning permission for 18 homes and communal open space in a good residential area of Swanley, Kent, went for £1.5m;
  • Three plots of land being sold off by Thurrock Council in Essex netted £1.26m and a commercial property in Grays, which attracted more than 140 bids, added a further £467,000 to the council total;
  • Land in a good residential location in Gillingham, Kent, with planning consent for seven new houses, sold £980,000;
  • A 14-bedroom boutique guest house near Brighton in the popular Kemptown area was sold for £861,000;
  • Collingham water booster station, near Newark, Nottinghamshire, a structure with potential for alternative use, subject to planning, sold for £6,000.

Managing director James Emson said: “The sheer variety of lots we offered this month was breathtaking and our bidders certainly responded, once again logging on in great numbers.”

Clive Emson’s next auction ends on 21 September, with lot entries closing on 30 August. The catalogue will be available from 3 September.
