The Financial Times’sProperty Market column looks at theimportance of anchor and flagship stores within shopping centres.
It concludes that many retailers do not consider a supermarket to besuitable as an “anchor” store. It also finds that most shoppers do not want to combineleisure shopping with food shopping. Capital Shopping Centres recentlyannounced it would replace the relatively unsuccessful Asda anchor store inits Gateshead MetroCentre with a branch of Debenhams.
However, this is not a universal view. David Henderson-Williams,director of Chesterfield Properties, supports the use of supermarkets asanchor stores. Most of its UK shopping centres have a food retailer.
