Canada’s Couche-Tard is in talks for a $50bn tie-up with Carrefour.
The companies said in separate statements last night that the talks were at an early stage.
Couche-Tard has 9,200 stores in North America and around 3,000 in Europe.
Carrefour is France’s largest supermarket chain with 2,000 supermarkets and 700 hypermarkets in Europe, as well as stores in Brazil and Argentina.
