Guildford borough council has selected Waitrose as the preferred bidder for a 2.5-acre redevelopment in Surrey.
The retailer’s proposals include converting the former Bellerby Theatre site into a mixed-use scheme, with a supermarket, homes and community facilities.
Waitrose director of development, Nigel Keen, said: “At this stage, we are aiming to hold a public consultation by the end of the year with a likely planning application in the new year.”
Cushman & Wakefield is advising the council.
