English Cities Fund – a consortium of English Partnerships, AMEC and Legal & General – has gained consent for its £100m regeneration of the Westgate business quarter in Wakefield.
Work will begin in September on the proposals which comprise a revamped railway station, around 50,000 sq ft of offices, a 150-bedroom hotel, 350 flats and 37,000 sq ft of leisure and retail space.
The scheme will also include a six-storey 1,450 space multi-storey car park space and improvements to the city’s inner ring road..
The scheme is receiving financial assistance from Wakefield council, Yorkshire Forward and the European Regional Development Fund.
Cabinet Member for Regeneration Councillor Denise Jeffery said: “Added to the work taking place at the Waterfront and on the Trinity Walk scheme, citizens and visitors will soon see a new Wakefield emerge.”
