Wal-Mart opens in Bristol

Wal-Mart is opening a store at Cribb’s Causeway, Bristol, on Monday.

It will be the first of up to 10 more specialising in low-cost goods that will open within five years. Others are to follow in Sutton Coldfield, near Birmingham and Havant, Hampshire, in October.

The 8,640 sq m (93,000 sq ft) outlet will be four times the size of the average British supermarket. The new outlet further threatens the Broadmead city-centre shopping complex. Planning restrictions could limit the impact Wal-Mart could have in the UK.
