Long lost plans for a series of garden buildings in the grounds of Wardour Castle, a Palladian country house in Wiltshire, are being put into effect by the current owners 230 years after they were first drawn up, only to be shelved because of lack of funds.
The designs came to light by chance after archivists stumbled upon them during recataloguing of the records of the Arundell family, the castle’s original owners.
Proposals which included an orangery, camelia house and a romantic folly in the form of an inn, have now been submitted to Salisbury district council for what is believed to the first attempt in Britain to fund the restoration of an 18th century house based on the vision of the original architects.
