The finance director who oversaw a disastrous £1bn investment strategy that pushed Thurrock Council to the brink of bankruptcy is to be investigated for misconduct.
The Financial Reporting Council will examine the conduct of Sean Clark, who was the finance director at Thurrock for more than a decade.
Thurrock declared itself in effect bankrupt in December 2022 after running up a deficit of £500m – among the largest losses in local government history.
An official government review found the Conservative-led authority had gambled hundreds of millions of pounds on risky commercial investments while allegedly covering up evidence of its losses and attempting to silence critics.
