A water “national grid” that would pipe supplies across the country has been proposed by the environment secretary.
George Eustice said he wants to use huge pipelines to connect reservoirs in higher rainfall areas, mainly in the west, to those more at risk of drought, mainly in the east.
These would cost billions and take years to construct even if the idea is adopted by the next prime minister.
