The purchase of the Plummers department store in Above Bar, Southampton, by Arlington Securities and Robert Fraser Estates has paved the way for a 400,000-sq ft shop development in the town centre.
The development partners will now pursue their plans for a £50m scheme which would create an enclosed concourse over Above Bar to provide three levels of new shopping. Each level would link into the existing John Lewis store, Tyrell & Green, from a central atrium and, at the upper level, there would be restaurant facilities. There are proposals for 600 parking spaces.
The project is to be undertaken in association with Southampton council and the developers are to submit a planning application shortly. Letting agents are L S Vail & Son and Strutt & Parker.
