Welsh Office expands search for new assembly building across Wales

The Welsh Office is now considering sites outside Cardiff in its search for a new Welsh assembly building. The Office has also denied local press reports that it is thought to be examining the possibility of design & build.

Crown & Co, which was appointed by the Welsh Secretary to undertake the search, has just submitted a report to its client detailing possible options for housing the assembly outside the Welsh capital.

The search includes not only major population centres, such as Newport, Wrexham and Swansea, but other locations across the whole of Wales.

A spokesperson for the Welsh Office confirmed that Cardiff’s status as the designated capital is provisional: “It is not written in stone. No decision has been made yet. All the options are open.”

Crown & Co. is looking for a building of 8,361 sq m (90,000 sq ft) to house the Assembly.
