Wendy’s is planning 50 more sites in the UK after trading at its first five restaurants proved stronger than expected.
The new sites will be a mixture of dark kitchens, dine-in restaurants and drive-throughs, the company said. It has already opened five dark kitchens as well as its restaurants, through a franchise agreement with SoftBank-backed Reef Technology.
The US burger chain has also signed two franchise partners to open Wendy’s restaurants in Yorkshire and the East Midlands.
It plans to open restaurants in the Republic of Ireland in 2023 and is seeking franchise partners to launch elsewhere in Europe.
Wendy’s first attempted to take on the UK market in the 1980s and again in 1992, but pulled out in 2001, saying that property costs were too high.
