Westfield beats Hammerson with Croydon submission

Westfield has pipped rival Hammerson to the post by submitting plans for the redevelopment of the 633,400 sq ft Whitgift Centre and its surrounds to Croydon council this week. The Australian developer, working with Whitgift’s freeholder, said its 1.5m sq ft proposals will restore the town to its former glory. The £1bn plans include around 1.3m sq ft of shops, 150,700 sq ft of leisure and up to 600 homes. Westfield director of development John Burton said it had “the experience, funding and team in place to deliver” the project. The developer is at loggerheads with Whitgift’s long leaseholders, Royal London Asset Management and the Irish Banking Resolution Corporation, and partner Hammerson. They have their own plans for the redevelopment. Westfield expects a decision on its proposals in January.
