Westfield completes steelwork frame for Stratford City

Westfield has completed the steelwork frame for the Stratford City shopping centre next to the 2012 Olympics Park in east London.

The final piece of steel for the core retail build has been erected on the 1.9m sq ft site.

The amount of steel used weighs more than 40,000 tonnes – the equivalent to 80m Gold Medals in the recent Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

The majority of the cladding on the retail anchor buildings, John Lewis, Marks & Spencer and Waitrose is also now complete.

The development, which opens in 2011, will be the gateway to the Olympic Park.

Keith Whitmore, director of design and construction at Westfield, said: “This is a real milestone in the build of this major project.

“We’ve stayed on programme despite some challenging weather conditions recently and now the steelwork is complete we will soon have the envelope water-tight with the glazing and cladding due to be completed in the coming weeks.”
