Westfield has paid around £200m for a site in Stratford, E20, adjacent to its shopping centre where it is planning an indoor ski centre.
It bought the site off the Department for Transport and London and Continental Railways, and has been reviewing options for development plans for some time.
The 4.6-acre site in the 2012 Olympic zone is set to become London’s first indoor ski slope to use real snow and will be almost double the size of existing centres in Milton Keynes and Hemel Hampstead.
Westfield has been working on plans to improve the shopping centre since it opened in 2011.
Plans include 1,225 homes, 30,000 sq ft of mixed-use space as well as an additional 100,000 sq ft of retail space
