Westfield and the Royal Mail Pension Fund’s £500m redevelopment of the Broadmarsh shopping centre has been approved by Nottingham City Council.

The jv will now begin to draw up detailed plans, which will be submitted as a series of detailed planning applications over the coming months.

Westfield and its jv partner propose to expand the shopping centre to the south to Canal Street in a series of blocks, almost tripling the size of the existing 400,000 sq ft shopping centre top 1.1m sq ft.

The jv originally announced plans for a redevelopment of the Broadmarsh centre in 2002. However, the plans were mothballed as a result of the credit crunch.

Phase one works are currently about to start focusing on the Drury Walk entrance and the introduction of a new food court within the heart of the centre. Works to Listergate Square will follow.

Peter Miller, chief executive of Westfield, said: “This decision means we are now able to draw up detailed plans for the development and provides an extra layer of confidence which will enable us to take our discussions with potential retailers to the next stage.”

“We understand the importance of this project as a major catalyst for the regeneration of the south of the city and we look forward to progressing the major project as quickly as possible with preparation works for the first phase already underway and exciting new brands such as Hollister and Cult already signed up.”
