Westminster council slams mayor’s ‘fiver-frontier’ threat

Ken Livingstone’s plans to set up a “fiver frontier” around central London have come under heavy fire from Westminster city council.

According to the council, the proposal is “nothing but a revenue-raising scheme which is bound to damage Westminster’s economy”.

At the special cabinet meeting this week, the council said it planned to submit an official complaint to the mayor and Transport for London, calling for the proposals for congestion charging to be dropped.

The mayor for London proposes to charge drivers £5 per day to drive within a circle bounded by Vauxhall Bridge Road to the west, running north along Grosvenor Place to Park Lane, past Marble Arch to Edgware Road, then eastwards along Marylebone Road towards Euston and King’s Cross.

Several council members have suggested that Ken Livingstone could be taken to judicial review if he refuses to take the proposals to public inquiry.
